For fifty years the Belin Arts Scholarship has funded the noble arts of painting, sculpture, photography, music, drama, dance, literature, and architecture, helping to bring success to the fortunate recipients, as well as joy to an appreciative public.

Eric Karpeles

Eric Karpeles

Eric Karpeles has exhibited his oil paintings at Marywood University and the Tria Gallery in New York. The recipient of many awards, Eric was commissioned to produce a painting-tribute for a week-long program investigating Elizabeth Bishop’s contributions to American and Brazilian poetry. He completed a room of painted panels for a multi-faith chapel in New York City donated by the Rockefellers and completed The Sanctuary Project, a traveling exhibit of painted panels dedicated to the HIV/AIDS communities across America.

Pamela Joseph

Pamela Joseph

Pamela Joseph is a multi-media artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally. After receiving the Belin Arts Scholarship, Pamela developed an interactive traveling installation about the power of women called “The Side Show of the Absurd,” exhibited at nine art spaces and museums around the country. Currently she is creating a series of oil paintings with collage on linen that further explores feminist issues, featuring postcards of paintings by famous artists such as Picasso.

John Hyer

John Hyer

Vocalist John Hyer received his scholarship in 1965, after graduating from Wilkes College. He became Executive Director of the Northeast Philharmonic and taught at Keystone Junior College. John spent 18 years as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and then as Executive Director of the Long Beach, California, Symphony Orchestra. He moved to Tampa, Florida to become Executive Director of the Florida Philharmonic. Currently, John teaches Humanities at St. Petersburg College and performs on occasion as a soloist at his church.

Barbara Hopkins

Barbara Hopkins

The Belin Scholarship enabled Barbara Hopkins to complete her master’s degree at The Mannes College of Music without taking out loans. Today, Barbara owns an independent record label, Cardinal Classics, has released several CDs which she sells internationally, teaches at the University of Connecticut, and is an orchestral musician.

Barry Hannigan

Barry Hannigan

Barry Hannigan made his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1984. He has since performed in Russia, China, England, Ireland, Norway, and New Zealand. His performances have aired on National Public Radio; he has been honored with many awards and prizes including those from the Ford, Surdna, and Presser Foundations; and has released three solo CDs for Black Canyon Records. Barry is a professor of music at Bucknell University and a rostered artist for the Pennsylvania Peforming Arts on Tour.

Robert Griffith

Robert Griffith uses wood and steel in his sculptures and in his unique furniture. Robert has exhibited his work extensively in the U.S. and abroad, Robert has also garnered recognition in books and magazines on art and design. His exhibitions have been featured in the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, the Everhart Museum, the John Elder Gallery in New York, and the Aberdeen Art Gallery, Scotland. Public art installations include the Fashion Institute of Technology, Gulf States Paper Corporation and Perkins Family Restaurants corporate headquarters.

Jennifer Gelb

Jennifer Gelb

When Jennifer Gelb received the Belin Arts Scholarship, it provided her with the unique opportunity to travel to Rome, Italy, to perform in a summer music festival, being featured in a role, she says, she always wanted to perform: Susanna in “Le Nozze di Figaro.” Following her trip to Italy, Jennifer worked for many years as a professional singer in the Midwest. Jennifer currently works as a training manager for Google, Inc., however, her creative background molds and shapes her work every day.

Rebecca Ferris

Rebecca Ferris attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City. It was there that her thesis film, Jonah and the Wail, about jazz trumpeter Jonah Jones, was awarded an Independent Feature Project Market Award. Currently as the owner of Cottage Films, her newest work is Miller’s Tale, about the actor, playwright and Scranton native Jason Miller. Additionally, Rebecca is about to embark on a film about the disappearing wetlands in Southeast Louisiana.

Elizabeth Feller

Elizabeth Feller

Since 1991 Elizabeth Feller has composed original musical pieces for a variety of projects, including plays, stage shows, documentaries, theatrical productions and professional development workshops. Elizabeth’s scholarship made it possible for her to create a workshop production. This in turn made “The Amazing Goldin” an attractive and doable project for a small professional theatre and landed it a slot in Electric Theatre Company’s 16th season. Currently, Elizabeth is conducting songwriting residencies in public schools.
